One challenge of being a coxswain is knowing how to manage your confidence levels, and that goes hand in hand with your ego. We are taught from the beginning that we need to be confident and that confidence needs to shine through to our athletes even if we aren’t feeling it. The confidence allows us to take charge in any given situation and manage that situation to a positive end- a well-executed practice, a securely loaded trailer, a medal on the awards dock. As you move through your career as a coxswain it becomes easier to feel that confidence and that can allow cockiness to set in. There is a feeling that you “know” and it becomes easier and easier to tune out when you are offered advice, or worse yet- that it is staring you in the face and you don’t see it. That is when ego takes over and gets in your way of being your absolute best.

In a recent Rowing Magazine profile with U.S. National Team coxswain Katelin Guregian she relates the story of how she wasn’t ultimately selected in 2012 for the Olympic women’s 8+. She stepped back and realized after careful self-analysis that she had made her coxing about her, and forgotten about what was most important- the team. What we can learn from this is that it is important to be accountable to yourself about what is really important and check that ego at the door. Ask yourself what you can do better and be humble about what you are doing now and what you did in the past. Be proud and confident, but be open and aware at the same time. A team is only as successful as its total sum of people- coaches, athletes and support staff. As the saying goes, coxswains make things happen. Be the catalyst for the entire team, and the rest will take care of itself.

The post Check Your Ego At The Door appeared first on The Coxguide.

The hot topic every winter conditioning season is whether coxswains should sit down on the erg? The answer is unequivocal yes! Here are three reasons why every coxswain should get the flywheel spinning alongside the rowers:

You are working on your fitness. Yes, even though we don’t move the boat physically it is important to look out for our own health and fitness. Developing and maintaining good habits should be a life long pursuit. Furthermore sitting on the erg give you another physical outlet for reducing the stress that you are sure to experience during the year.

Erging gives you insight into what your athletes are experiencing. By spending time on the erg you can come to understand what your athletes go through over the thousands of meters (or more) they put in on and off the water. The mental and physical challenges of rowing your rower’s face will come into focus more easily if you have experienced them yourself. Armed with this knowledge you will be able to support your athletes better when it counts.

You will gain respect from your athletes. When your rowers see you working out they will more readily see you as someone that supports and understands them. When they see you pushing through an erg workout they will trust that when you ask for more from them on the water that it comes from experiencing it yourself. That trust will make them more willing to give more and push harder for everyone including you.

This is not saying that you should be doing the same workouts each day as your rowers because you have other duties to perform during winter conditioning as well, and everyone knows that. But on those days when you can fit a spin on the erg alongside your teammates, it will pay dividends!

Hey there friends, it has been a long and dusty road here recently at the Cox Guide. As you know, I rebuilt the site with the idea of providing you with a fresh platform and lots of new content to satisfy your rowing and coxing needs. All was going well until… the site imploded. Yes, things went sideways and its taken me this long to make things right again. We are on firm ground (or smooth water?) again and ready to give you some of the goodness you were hoping for. So, all this is here to say that all is well in 2019 and the Cox Guide crew is here to lead you forward. So settle into your seats, pick up your mic, and get ready to blast off the line towards good things to come! Thanks for sticking with me- George

Hi everyone, and welcome to the newly revamped website for the Down and Dirty Guide to Coxing! A refresh was long overdue and this coincides well with the work going on behind the scenes to create the newest edition of the book. I am hoping the new edition will be ready in 2018, but for now I hope that you’ll enjoy the posts and information I hope to share here with you. I am looking forward to sharing things I’ve worked on as a coach, insights I’ve gained over the years, and hopefully a few guest posts from noteworthy coaches and coxswains as well. Time will tell, but I think the sky’s the limit and I’m glad you are along with me for the ride! Please feel free to send me questions or comments, and I’ll answer as many as I can here, or personally as appropriate. Smooth waters, George.
