Cuts for experienced rowers (at least one year of experience) will be based on erg testing, and coaches knowledge of previous performance. Performance includes physical conditioning, technical ability, personal attitude and behavior. Each rower will be judged on an individual basis and emphasis will be put on current abilities. Illness and other outstanding situations will be taken into consideration. It is likely that several spare rowers and coxswains will also be kept as part of the varsity squad. The coaches reserve the right to final decisions concerning the status of all rowers and coxswains.
It is the goal of the coaches to fill three full eights of experienced rowers, other crews will be filled with novices. The three experienced crews will be: Varsity 8 (V8), Second Varsity 8 (2V), and Third Varsity 8 (3V). In the event that there are a sufficient number of strong light weight rowers (145lbs. max) then the coaches may consider the possibility of a Varsity Lightweight 8 (VLwt.8).
There will be practice erg tests given every third Thursday from September till January with the exception of December. Dates, and alternate dates, based on the school calendar and weather conditions, will be supplied to each experienced rower at the beginning of the school year. The practice tests are for the benefit of the rowers so that they may judge their conditioning and progress. They are not mandatory. The final test and cuts will be announced, but should be held in mid January. It is the rowers responsibility to be in shape before such time.
The main test element will be a 20 minute ergometer test. Other elements may be used also, and those will be announced by December. Standards for each boat can be found below.
Varsity 8 Standard: 5200m
Varsity 2V/Ltw8 Standard: 5000m
3V Minimum Standard: 4900m
Those rowers who can not make the 4900 meter minimum 3V standard will not be
considered for the experienced squad. Again, the coaches reserved the right to final decisions
concerning the status of all rowers.
