The job you have accepted is a very important one with many responsibilities. Your job runs from the time you accept it till the end of the next season. It is a "full time" position. This sheet will detail many, but not all of the requirements for this position.
1. You will answer to the coaches only. You are the coaches assistant, and in many ways will be alternate coaches. Furthermore, you should be working to make the coaches job simpler so that they can get the important issues taken care of. You must learn to delegate authority to other team members so they can assist you. However, you are not "above" the other members of the team.
2. You must put the team and it's needs ahead of your own personal desires, both on and off the water. It is important that you remain impartial and non-judgmental.
3. A)You must lead by example. That is, you are required to be the best student-athlete you can be. Your physical conditioning should be one of the best on the team. You must strive to improve your technique everyday. You should be the first to arrive and the last to leave.
B)Your behavior should reflect that of the adult that you are supposed to be. Pranks, "horsing" around, and letting others do all the work will not be tolerated. Get the job done as needed.
4. It is important to be positive and encourage ALL rowers in all boats. This includes water and land workouts. At the same time it is your job to help the athletes to learn to push themselves to their highest potential. As you know, slackers are not wanted on our team. You can help by identifying those individuals, alerting the coaches, and letting them know that this behavior will not be tolerated.
Make workouts team/boat efforts. All for one and one for all. No weak links. Each person can succeed if they try. All we ask is that they do try.
5. Compassion and understanding work as well as structure and "no excuses." A balance of both is best.
6. Your responsibilities also fall to enforcing proper behavior and the guidelines printed in the team Rules & Regulations. It is your job to make sure that coaches instructions are followed and carried out with proper speed. You should make sure that workouts are done, and goofing off and "horseplay" is not encouraged. Things that should also be discouraged are hazing, excessive foul language, theft and vandalism. All of which are grounds for dismissal from the team.
7. Daily spring season responsibilities are as follows:
The bottom line is the less that the coaches have
to worry about getting people to do what they should
already be doing, the more energy they can devote to
making your boat faster! You as captains are vital links,
and figure heads for this happening. You are THE
representatives for the rowers on the team.
